Contract
What the customer holds, over time
Contracts, assets, amendments, renewals, cancellations
Contracts hold the terms; assets hold the current state; asset state periods hold that state over time. Together they are what makes it possible to answer the only question that matters during an amendment: what did the customer have on the day this change takes effect?
An amendment is a new transaction read against current asset state — not an edit of the original.

The architecture

An amendment is a new transaction read against current asset state, not an edit of the old one. That is why the asset state periods matter: they are what lets the system say what the customer held on the day the change takes effect, and therefore what the billing delta should be.
